Traditional Syrian soap comes from the city of Aleppo, where it has been handmade by its inhabitants for over 2000 years. The composition remained unchanged from the beginning and was a combination of laurel oil, olive oil and foaming substance (currently sodium hydroxide plays this role). Soap is also called olive-laurel soap or simply Alep. Invented by the Phoenicians, it was one of the first soaps in history, which makes it the mother of all cleaning products. It has been known in Europe for almost a thousand years, but in Poland it gained popularity only in the twentieth century. Valued mainly for its extremely simple composition and antibacterial properties.
